Flowers as an important element in special contexts or dates have been used since prehistory. Its use to decorate places or honor the deceased is a constant since prehistoric times, as could be demonstrated in graves of the Neanderthal period, in which the fossil remains were covered with flower pollen, apparently with ritual use. [Required quotation]

In ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, flowers were used for the ornament of events and in the wakes. In the Middle Ages, the custom was continued and, from the seventeenth century, in Western Europe the ladies were responsible for decorating the residences with flowers that they got in their garden or acquiring them to professional cultivators who marketed them, being Holland one of the first countries that specialized in exotic species.

The professionalization of these establishments is recent and the emergence of the florist as we know it dates back to the 19th century, coinciding with the urbanization process of developed societies. Until that time, there were street vendors in which the flowers provided or made ad hoc branches on indicated dates and, in rural areas, funeral home prepared flower crowns for deceased.

In recent years, the trend is to integrate all flower sales services into a versatile trade that sometimes also is responsible for crop. Flower workshops combine the cultivation of their own species and marketing.
