A hotel is a building planned and conditioned to provide accommodation services to people and that allows visitors to travel. Hotels provide guests with additional services such as restaurants, swimming pools and day care centers. Some hotels have conference services and encourage people to host conventions and meetings at their property.

Hotels are normally classified into categories according to the degree of comfort, positioning, and the level of services they offer. The following categories can be found in each country:

Stars (0 to 5)
Letters (from A to E)
Classes (from the fourth to the first)
Diamantes y “World Tourism”
These classifications are exclusively national; Comfort and level of service may vary from one country to another for the same category and are based on objective criteria: room size, bathroom, television, swimming pool, etc.

At a business level, the hotel can be considered a traditional company. The term “hotel industry” is often used to define the collective. Its management is based on the control of production costs and the correct organization of the resources (rooms) available, as well as an adequate management of rates, often based on seasonal changes (high, medium and low) and on bargaining for housing groups of people as opposed to individual housing.

In recent years, new ways of managing hotels based on techniques known in other areas, such as condominiums or time sharing, have appeared, but they are not yet a generalized system.

It should be added that in many countries hotels are considered spas, resort hotels and so-called hospital hotels, and the above classifications of quality, comfort and services are applied to them.
